Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Celestial Collaboration with Khalid Shafar
Merging Time, Art, and the Lunar Cycle
Jaeger-LeCoultre continues its pursuit of artistic excellence with a striking new collaboration under its Made of Makers program. This year, the Maison partners with renowned Emirati designer Khalid Shafar to unveil “Crescent to Crescent”, an immersive installation that explores the connection between time, design, and the celestial rhythms of Ramadan.
Now open at The Dubai Mall Grand Atrium, this installation beautifully captures the 29 phases of the lunar cycle, the same cycle that dictates the Islamic calendar and plays a vital role in the practice of Ramadan. It serves as a tribute to both Jaeger-LeCoultre’s horological expertise—where celestial movements have long influenced mechanical complications—and Shafar’s artistic vision, which blends contemporary design with Middle Eastern heritage.
A Fusion of Timekeeping and Art
At six meters wide and three meters tall, “Crescent to Crescent” is both visually stunning and conceptually profound. The installation features 29 intricately designed moons, representing the complete lunar cycle from crescent to full moon and back.
Each element of the design reflects the craftsmanship and innovation that Jaeger-LeCoultre is known for:
Guilloché-inspired engravings – A nod to the delicate decorative technique mastered by the Métiers Rares™ atelier
A two-sided experience – One side displays a color gradient, mimicking the moon’s daily evolution, while the other plays with light and movement, offering a dynamic, ever-changing perspective
A tribute to celestial horology – Inspired by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s famous moon phase complications, seen in the Rendez-Vous Moonand Duomètre Quantième Lunaire
Shafar, known for seamlessly merging Emirati craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, describes the piece as an exploration of the sacred rhythms of time:
“For centuries, the sight of the new crescent moon has marked the beginning of Ramadan. I wanted to capture this sacred rhythm in a way that honors both tradition and contemporary design.”
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Ongoing Celebration of Time
From its founding in 1833, Jaeger-LeCoultre has been guided by celestial movements, crafting timepieces that do more than just measure hours—they honor the cosmos. The Made of Makers program reflects this philosophy, bringing together world-class artists from various disciplines to interpret the passage of time in unexpected ways.
Past collaborations have spanned visual art, gastronomy, music, and perfumery, with talents such as Swiss contemporary artist Zimoun, lettering artist Alex Trochut, and Michelin-starred chef Nina Métayer. With Khalid Shafar, Jaeger-LeCoultre now extends this dialogue to Middle Eastern craftsmanship, further strengthening its relationship with the region’s rich artistic heritage.
Where to Experience It
“Crescent to Crescent” is now on display at The Dubai Mall Grand Atrium throughout Ramadan, before traveling to other locations in the city. This is an opportunity to experience time not just as a concept, but as a living, breathing artistic expression.
Jaeger-LeCoultre reminds us that time is more than numbers on a dial—it is movement, rhythm, and the fabric of history itself.
